Rail Based Multi Modal Freight Logistics Park Acrross the DMIC (Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridors)

Rail Based Multi Modal Freight Logistics Park Acrross the DMIC (Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridors)

  1. Logistics play a citadel role in the modern intelligent supply chain management. It is defined as the broad range of activities concerned with effective and efficient movement of semi-finished or finished product from one business to another or from manufacturer/distributor/retailer to the end consumer. It relates to freight transportation, warehousing material handling, protective packaging inventory control, order processing, and marketing, forecasting and other value added services.
  2. With a view to provide efficient logistics services, Indian Railways has embarked into a massive investment to create dedicated freight corridor between Delhi and Mumbai (called Western DFC) and Ludhiana and Howrah (called Eastern DFC), which could provide high speed, heavy pay load only for freight traffic. Western DFC passes through most high density transport arteries of the country i.e. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar pradesh with a route length of 1483km.
  3. Gujarat shares 38% of the route covering Valsad, Surat, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, Mehsana, Palanpur. This corridor is expected to carry predominantly, container traffic, bulk and break-bulk cargo. To support this infrastructure, DMIC Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, Special Economic Zones, MMLPs Investment Regions, Industrial Area are likely to be set up contiguous to Western DFC in the coming years.MMLP is the refined form of Logistics Park where various value added services are rendered in addition to rail/road based transportation. It is now-a-days a globally identified supply management and known by different names in different countries.
  4. As the economic barriers among European Union were dislodged, it was essential to rationalize the transport and logistics structure by revitalizing the railways, promoting maritime and rationally integrating all modes of transport. In China, the shifting of closed economy to globalised economy enhances the need to develop a sound logistics industry.
  5. Cushman and Wakefield have published a report “Logistics Industry- Real Estates’ New Power House” which avers that Indian logistics industry is expected to grow annually @ 15 to 25%. Major cities like Kolkata Mumbai, Chennai-Hyderabad, have identified locations for Logistics Park. These are the different kind of logistics services:
    • 3 PL services- mainly provide outsourced or third party logistics services to the companies by transportation and warehousing.
    • 4 PL Services- offering client specific solution to supply chain needs and they execute the solutions by facilitating the necessary tie up between different agencies and modes of transport.
  6. Merits of MMLP
    • Excellent transport links of rail and road
    • Custom clearance facilities
    • Round the clock services
    • One window services
    • Enhanced security systems
    • Availability of more options to the users
    • Value added services
    • Indian Railways intend to develop MMLPs through PPP along with proposed DFC and at strategic locations for containerized as well as bulk and break-bulk cargo in order to enhance rail –co-efficient with resultant increase in the modal share of railways.
  7. Gujarat, being strategically situated on the west coast of the country, has emerged as one of the fastest growing industrial states with 26 districts in the land area of 1.96 lakh sq. km. It has the longest costal line of 1600 km hosting 1 major port and 40 non-major ports – Kandla, Mumbai, Pipavav, Navlakhi, Magdallah ports are worth to mention. Endowed with only 6% of the geographical area and 5% of india’s population, Gujarat’s share at current prices accounts for nearby 6.7% of the national GDP. It accounts for 20% of the country’s total industrial production and contributes nearly 7% to the national GDP. The prominent cities of the state are Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Jamnagar, Rajkot and Jamnagar.Several land marks achievements in respect of industries agriculture, commodities and infrastructure can be credited to Gujarat.
  8. Special Economic Zones
SEZ is considered Growth Engine which can boost manufacturing, augment exports and generate employment.
  9. Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board (GIDB)
    • GIDB is continuously striving to harness the potential of public-private investment in infrastructure sector by identifying and creating specific opportunities. GIDB itself does not develop infrastructure projects but acts as an catalyst for their development.
    • The role of GIDB is to undertake the responsibility of the project preparation exercise. It supports the conduct of pre-feasibility studies for various project. If the project is found bankable, it could be offered to the public-private sectors for execution. These studies are conducted through reputed Consultants.
    • With this backdrop, GIDB has taken initiative for setting up logistics parks at 5 designated areas in Gujarat – namely Ahmedabad-Surendranagar, Palanpur-Mahsana, Gandhidham-Samakhiali, Bharuch-Dahej and Surat-Hazira. These are important iindustrial/manufacturing centres of petro-chemcials, pharmaceuticals, textiles, dairy product. Spices SSI and electronics goods contiguous to DFC/DMIC. GIDB has commissioned RITES with this study.
  10. DMIC in Gujarat
Ministry of Railways has embarked a massive investment plan of laying Dedicated Freight Corridor between Delhi and Mumbai passing through Gujarat and other States with route length of 1483 km. The area of 150 km on either side of the line will be developed as an industrial corridor. Total four industrial areas and 2 investment regions have been proposed by GOG.
  11. DMIC in Other States
The DMIC has identified a total of 9 IRs and 15 IAs spreading across six states.
  12. Gujarat Infrastructure Agenda
    • Vision 2010 in the first ‘Holistic Plan’ prepared by GIDB for infrastructure development in Gujarat taking into consideration of comprehensive view of all infrastructure sectors and seamlessly integrates them into a synchronized and synergistic plan.
    • Thereafter GIDB has made an ambitious long range perspective planning ‘The Blue Print’ for Infrastructure in Gujarat 2020 (BIG 2020) to ascertain the economic structure of Gujarat in next decade.

      Geography and Climate of surat

      Geography

Surat the second capital of Gujarat is growing much as its neighboring metro Mumbai and by 2020 it is estimated that Surat will be the largest city in Gujarat state and its urbanization will stretch from Kosamba in north to Billimora in south. Surat is a port city situated on the banks of the Tapti river (damming of the Tapti caused the original port facilities to close, the nearest port is now in the Hazira area of Surat Metropolitan Region). The city is located at 21°10′N 72°50′E / 21.17°N 72.83°E / 21.17; 72.83 It has an average elevation of 13 meters. The Surat district is surrounded by Bharuch, Narmada (North), Navsari and Dang (South) districts. To the west is the Gulf of Cambay. The climate is tropical and monsoon rainfall is abundant (about 2,500 mm a year).

Surat has grown in area since the early 1700s. The oldest part of the city developed in the area between the train station and the area known as Athwalines. Since the 1970s most of the new development including the most desirable location for the city’s burgeoning middle and upper class is the area between Athwalines and the coast at Dumas.

      Climate

Surat has a Tropical monsoon climate, moderated strongly by the Arabian Sea. The summer begins in early March and lasts till June. April and May are the hottest months, the average temperature being 30 °C. Monsoon begins in late June and the city receives about 800 mm of rain by the end of September, with the average temperature being around 28 °C during those months. October and November see the retreat of the monsoon and a return of high temperatures till late November. Winter starts in December and ends in late February, with average temperatures of around 22 °C, and little rain.

Very often heavy monsoon rain brings floods in the Tapi basin area. In last two decades, the city has witnessed major floods every four years, the worst being the flood of August 2006, perhaps the costliest in the city’s history. In the second week of August 2006, a massive flood caused severe damage to the city of Surat. According to a report released by Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad (IIM-A), massive flood after release of water from Ukai Dam had caused major human tragedy and property damage estimated at Rs 22,000 cr on that day. In less than three days, at least 150 people died directly due to flood and many other due to water-borne diseases that followed. More than 1500 animal carcasses were later hauled out of the mud.

Ahmedabad: The annual chariot festival of the Hindu god Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra started here Tuesday morning with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi flagging off the daylong procession amid the chanting of hymns.

The 133rd Jagannath Rath Yatra started from the Jagannath temple at Jamalpur locality at 7 a.m. with Modi performing the ‘pahandi’ ritual (carrying the deities from the temple to the chariots) and cleaning the Lord’s chariot with a golden broom.

He then pulled the ropes of the chariot to embark on the 22 km long ‘nagarcharya’ procession, that will wind it’s way through Ahmedabad through the length of the day.

Minister of State for Home Amit Shah was present at the temple along with other political leaders and other dignitaries.

The procession comprises 18 decorated elephants and 18 trucks displaying various ‘akhadas’ and ‘bhajan mandalis’. Before the start of the yatra, tribals performed the traditional folk dance at the temple.

A huge crowd thronged the temple and then joined the procession as it began its journey under the watchful gaze of 14,000 police personnel who had spread out through the city.

A tiered structure of around 600 assistants and sub-inspectors, 275 inspectors, 77 assistants commissioners, 31 deputy commissioners watched over by five joint commissioners of police marks the security blanket thrown over Ahmedabad to ensure the peaceful conduct of this magnum annual religious event of Gujarat.

“We are prepared for all eventualities and have worked out the security for the event with care and foresight, since Ahmedabad has for long been in the crosshairs of terror networks,” said Satish Sharma, joint commissioner of police.

The arrest of two suspected activists of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) from here Monday night had heightened security fears. However, officials said the arrests of the two with arms and ammunition had not dampened enthusiasm for the festival.

“As far as altered security perceptions are concerned, the only change is that anti-sabotage vigilance has been intensified after the SIMI members’ arrests,” said Sharma.

CCTV cameras have been set up in the whole route of the chariot journey, which includes sensitive areas like Kalupur, Dariapur and Shahpur.

MF Hussain passes away passes away

India’s most celebrated painter — MF Hussain passed away in London on Thursday (June 9) morning. The noted artist died at Royal Brompton hospital in London at 2:30 a.m. local time.

A recipient of Padma Vibhushan in 1991, Hussain was in indifferent health for the last month-and-a-half. Hussain, 95, died in exile from his homeland in India, having become a Qatari citizen in 2006.

Husain had come under intense criticism following his controversial paintings on Hindu goddesses.

One of his most controversial paintings was the depiction of Mother India in the nude and was superimposed on a map of India. After a series of sustained protests by Hindu groups, he withdrew the painting from an exhibition, and later apologised.

One of India’s greatest masters on the world art stage, Husain’s paintings regularly fetched over $1 million at auctions around the world.

      Dudhsagar Dairy Mahesana

      Chairman’s Speech

It gives me a great pleasure to present before you the 49th Annual Report and Accounts for the financial year ended on 31st March, 2009. The financial year gone by has been a very good year for our Union. Our turnover crossed Rs.1750 crores recording 18% growth over the previous financial year. However, there is a need for all of us to focus on growth momentum in milk procurement as well. At an average milk price of Rs.300.40 per kg fat, milk procurement during the year was 66.51 crores kg; compared to previous year figures, the growth rate was 6.4%. It is surely a matter of great pride to have achieved a high business growth. But we cannot be complacent. Not remaining satisfied as India’s Largest Co-operative Dairy, we need to evolve as India’s Best Co-operative Dairy achieving quantum
leaps in milk production / productivity / processing & manufacturing capabilities and above all the quality improvements.
As you know we have been pursuing the merger of Mehsana Regional Telibiya Utpatak Sahakari Sangh Ltd. (MRTS) with our Union for the last 1½ years. It is a matter of great pleasure for all of us and an important feat in the history of the Union that the process has since been completed and MRTS is now an integral part of our Union. The Registrar, Co-operative Societies, Gujarat state has formally given approval for the merger whereby all the assets of the MRTS including 47 acres of land now stands transferred to the ownership of our Union. With this merger, there is a real value enhancement to the assets of the Union, increasing our scope and potential, in furtherance of our objectives. We remain grateful to the officials of N.D.D.B, Government of Gjuarat and MRTS for all assistance and help extended, facilitating this merger. We will be able to usefully deploy the Machinery, Storage Tanks, Godowns etc. for a 1000 MT Cattle Feed Plant that we are planning to establish there. Thereby, we will, not only be able to meet the entire feed requirements of our cattle population, but also with the help of GCMMF, be able to sell the surplus to the Associated Dairies and thereafter to all the milk producers in the State of Gujarat.

Of late we have developed a new value-added product viz. SAGAR HYPRODAN and the production has also already been commenced for the last three months. It is very encouraging to note that from the very start itself, we have been receiving very good response from the milk producers. In times to come, let us venture for a differentiated product mix of cattle feeds to cater to the specific needs of animals right from it’s birth through calving, pregnancy, lactation and other stages of its’ life.

The current year 2009-10 happens to be our 50th year of successful existence. Commemorating the event in the interest of Milk Producers, we have decided to celebrate the year as Golden Jubilee Year of our Union. Keeping the milk producers interest in mind, many new initiatives are thought for implementation during the year. Besides the proposal for a 1000 MT Cattle Feed Pant, there is also a plan to establish a 100 MT independent, latest technology Spray Drier Powder Plant.

In the year 2005 when Dudhmansagar Dairy became functional, the daily sales was around 3 lacs kg which within one year reached 4.5 lacs kg; thereafter in the subsequent year, the sales was 5.5 lacs kg per day and now, by the end of current year we would have geared up for an increased production and sales of around 10 lacs kg per day. We have been able to capture a vast market beyond Gujarat in Delhi & NCR areas capable of generating more revenues and consequential benefits. Delhi has a liquid milk market of about 50 lacs kg per day out of which our share is over 20% or 10 lac kgs. This is a matter of great pride for all of us. Major capital spending is required to expand production capacities. As margin money your Board of Directors has recommended an issue of Shares. I am sure that all of you will extend full support to approve the expansion plans and the issue of shares towards meeting our ongoing capital expenditure plans..

As part of our Golden Jubilee Year celebrations, few programs are initiated and many more are in the process of implementation. We have taken insurance policies to cover for Medical, Life and Personal Accident risks of all the 4733 employees of our Societies. ID cards are issued to these employees and the process of issue of Uniforms is in progress. A museum meant to familiarize visitors and members of the Union with our value system is also thought for. Besides, a documentary depicting all important events throughout, since the beginning of our co-operative movement will be made. Programs to improve upon the participation of women in societies, schemes to encourage / award best societies / secretaries of societies are also in consideration. It is also under review as to how Pension & Saving schemes could be introduced for our milk producers.

Schemes are initiated to achieve an uniform color code for all our society buildings. Installation of Bulk Milk Coolers (BMCs) and ISO certifications of Societies are important steps towards quality improvement and let us aim in achieving this twin objective for all our societies.

We must be proud that even in prolonged recession we could sustain and grow. There are enough evidences to suggest that the village economy performed better in comparison to urban areas. I thank all of you for the continued support in achieving this feat. We are aware that dairying is not an easy task. Intrinsically milk is a very delicate and an essential food item that is produced twice a day but calls for immediate processing / disposal both times during the day. If not appropriately and promptly handled with improvement in the entire processes, the business will be subjected to losses.

Great efforts are required if one has to sustain in a highly competitive environment. Market price of milk & milk products is not within our control and are market driven.

Similarly prices of inputs are also market driven and not within our controls. In such a market scenario, increasing the milk yield per animal, thus reducing the cost per unit of milk is what we can and must aim at. This is, perhaps, the only way that can work as an Aladdin’s magic lamp for us. Let us hope that all our milk producers aim to achieve this -by developing cross-breed calves and bringing them up healthy -using scientific methods viz. artificial insemination, balanced cattle feed, calving in each cycle etc. In this Golden Jubilee year many programs are in store to impart awareness among our milk producers.

We all know how fast developments are taking place. We need to position ourselves appropriately in tune with the time. Do you think that we need to wait another 50 years to achieve what we have achieved during the past 50 years? Nah, so let us join hands to achieve in a decade what we achieved in past 5 decades. This is absolutely not impossible; bare facts corroborate this. Yield per animal in Israel is more than 32 ltrs milk per day and even in Haryana the average milk yield per animal is 7.7 ltrs per day. These facts point to tremendous scope for improving our own milk yield which as of now is as low an average of 3.5 ltrs milk per day for all kinds of breeds. Let us develop a strong desire to excel and to adopt latest technological innovations; undoubtedly, there will be improvements in the milk-yield of our animals.

      Co-operative Societies
Our milk producers are our strength and we are duty bound in ensuring that they get the best services. Herein below is given a brief account of the services being provided by us.
      Animal Husbandry
In animal husbandry, we are much ahead in our practices. Nevertheless, it is a matter of concern to learn from our veterinarians that almost 58% of the illness in animals is caused by insufficient / balanced cattle feed. When we have arrangement in ensuring that our producers get cattle feeds in enough quantities, at their door-step & at reasonable price, there is no reason why our animals are deprived of feeds in sufficient quantities. Because when animals fall sick, our producers will be financially at loss, firstly from loss of milk and then due to costs involved in treating their animals. During the year 5,93,449 animals were treated by our veterinary doctors; the average cost of visit per case works out to be Rs.110. Another important observation during the treatment of animals is that high milk yielding animals are more prone to Mastitis and Sub Clinical Mastitis. Due to this, there is going to be permanent reduction in the milk yield of animals. Cleanliness of udder and the surroundings of animals are of prime importance here. A minimal preventive cost will many times be rewarding from the incremental increase in milk yield. We should use Saaf Kits in ensuring quality through cleanliness, shouldn’t we?
      Artificial Insemination
We have been disseminating Progressive Animal Husbandry where the norm is to have improved, cross-bred animals of high milk yield (and not to possess more animals of lesser yield); higher economic benefits will result from such practices. Your Union has increased AH facilities for timely insemination to produce improved and healthy calves. During the year 508 AI Ceentres were functioning and altogether 8,41,860 artificial inseminations were performed. It is my request to all milk producers to adopt only proven Artificial Insemination (AI) techniques replacing traditional or indigenous methods.

With the assistance of DURDA, your Union has been carrying out training programs on artificial insemination. During the year 49 persons were given the training on the same. If trained employees are available in our villages, it will greatly facilitate and ensure timely & proper insemination whenever the same is required.

      NECO Project
As per a survey carried out by the Union, in the year 2005, 1,42,888 animals, almost 19% of the total animal population, have Not Even Conceived Once (NECO Animals). On treating such animals in 242 societies, it was observed that 14704 of the animals treated conceived recording a 70% success in the treatment carried out. In the current year, 242 more societies are being taken up under this program.
Program to Create Genetically Improved Bulls
The Union and NDDB have entered into an agreement for implementing a joint, five-year Project aimed at creating genetically improved ‘Mehsani breed’ bulls. NDDB will be providing financial and technical support for the implementation of this Project. As of now 47 villages have been selected for implementation under this Project.
      Vaccination Programs
From time to time the Union has been carrying out vaccination programs with the assistance of the Government and BAIF. As a result, we could, to a great extent, avoid spreading of contagious deceases in animals. During the year 6,02,141 animals were vaccinated for FMD, 16,425 Theileriosis, 2,03,906 for HS and ²,179 for anti rabies. Also, during the year mass de-worming doses were given to 7,42,319 animals. For different programs we have received Government assistance of Rs.89 Lacs.
      Insurance Schemes
The participation in the insurance schemes of our members and their family was very satisfactory as evident from the figures given below:
      Particulars Year 2007-08 Year 2008-09
      Janashree Ordinary Janashree Ordinary
      No of Societies 1452 1451 1431 1430
      Members joined 206957 179594 216597 189674
      No of claims 1236 492 1139 429
      Claim amount – in lacs rupees 344.77 127.25 362.30 110.50
Education Assistance – in lacs rupees 218.02 249.05
The participation for Cattle Insurance does not, however, point to any encouraging initiative by our milk producers. This will only lead to loss in income to our milk producers besides reduced milk production and procurement. If with a marginal cost animals are insured, unexpected losses can be mitigated. During the year the Union has given Rs.57,85,271/-towards cattle insurance premium subsidy, in insuring 60074 animals of our milk producers.
      Cattle Feed Production & Supply
Cattle Feed constitutes to be one of the most important factors in milk production and in the maintenance and care of animals. Therefore ensuring availability of cattle feed to our milk producers – timely and at the most reasonable price – shall be one of our main endeavors. With a rise of about 19% in raw material prices, during the year, we were left with no other alternatives than to increase the price of Sagardan and Hyprodan. Still we could manage supplying high quality balanced feed at a very reasonable price in comparison to the quality and price of other feeds available in the market. During the year we could supply 2,56,225 MT of cattle feed utilizing the production capacities of both the cattle feed plants at 95%. However, it is important to note that in 250 Societies, Sagardan is neither known as an essential cattle feed nor given to the animals. We must ensure that even these Societies use cattle feed.
      Society Building & Color schemes
It is a matter of great pride not only for our co-operative institution but the entire village to have one’s own Society Building. These Society Buildings will greatly facilitate milk procurement, sale of cattle feed and other co-operative activities. Union has evolved Society Building schemes and the assistance is available according to society categories. Presently 703 societies have their own buildings. Necessary actions are initiated to construct buildings in 83 more societies. It is my earnest request to all the societies which have no buildings to take necessary steps in this direction and your Union will only be happy to extend all possible assistance in this regard. During the year 68 societies have taken the benefit of the Society Building Color Scheme.
      Quality & ISO Certification
We are committed to the production and supply of safe and quality milk & milk products to the best satisfaction of the customer requirements. Our main dairy plant at Mehsana, Chilling Centres at Vihar, Kadi and Harij have already got certifications for Food Safety (ISO: 22000) and Quality (ISO: 9001). Our main dairy plant is also certified for Environment Preservation practices – ISO: 14001. Besides, both our Cattle Feed Plants (CFP Ubkhal & CFP Boriavi) and 85 milk societies have also been added to the list of Centres / Societies with ISO: 9001 certifications.
During the current financial year 2009-10 we have plans to take ISO: 22000 and ISO: 9001 certifications for Dudhmansagar Dairy – Manesar and for our Chilling Centres at Kheralu and Hansapur. A hundred more milk societies will also be included for ISO: 9001 certification. Looking ahead, let us include 100 societies every year for ISO certifications.
In 119 societies, bulk coolers of different capacities are installed. It is a matter of great pleasure to note that in view of the benefits of Bulk Coolers, many more societies have come forward for installation of Bulk Milk Coolers in their area. During the current year 75 more societies will be covered for Bulk Coolers. There is, however, some delay, as is our experience, in obtaining assistance from the Government. During the year we have been able to get Government assistance of Rs.38 Lacs for installation of Bulk Coolers under the Clean Milk Production (CMP) scheme.
      Goal Setting
We are all familiar with and capable of formulating our own mission and goal setting in our endeavor to grow and excel. Let us, therefore, in furtherance of our objective, aim at becoming the best among all societies or the best among all Unions, as the case may be. Let us achieve this by improving our quality standards throughout the value chain from the producers of milk to the ultimate consumers of our products.
      Vote of thanks
Our achievements would not have been possible without the co-operation from each one and all of you who actively took part in this endeavor. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I express my sincere thanks to all who extended their support to the success of our overall operations.

We are also thankful to the Board of Directors of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF) for their continued support.

I also express my sincere thanks to the Government of Gujarat, the Government of India, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Banks and all Institutions who extended their support during the financial year.

Dudhsagar Research Association has always been supportive in carrying out various activities for the benefit of our milk producers. I express my thanks to the Board of Directors of DURDA.

I also express my heartiest thanks to the Management, Departmental Heads, Officers, Staff and Workers of the Union and also all members of the societies for their valuable co-operation and the support.

      Jay Co-operation….

      Ahmedabad Rath Yatra 2010

The three deities started their ritual journey to the carts early in the morning in a colourful sight amid the chants of mantra and drum beat. After the ceremonial sweeping by the Puri King of the three chariots with the golden broom, the three deities – Lord Jagannath (another name for Lord Krishna), his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra – will be brought out of the 12th century Jagannath temple in chariots and taken to another shrine called Gundicha in Puri town.

Thousands of devotees pull these chariots with ropes tied to each chariot.

The 11-day long festival is a celebration symbolic of the journey of the three deities from Dwarka to attend a religious function in Kurukshetra some 5,000 years ago.

Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements have been put in place in view of the last year’s stampede in which six persons were killed during the yatra. According to officials, over 80 platoons of armed police personnel besides two companies of Rapid Action Force have been deployed in and around the city for smooth conduct of the yatra.

The state government has also put up measures for the smooth control of vehicular movements during the yatra. To ensure safety of the devotees from the blistering heat, there will be also round-the-clock supply of power and water during the festival.

      Ahmedabad Rath Yatra

Meanwhile, the 132nd Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath in the Gujarat city of Ahmedabad began on Wednesday morning from Jagganath temple in Jamalpur area here amidst tight security arrangements.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi symbolically cleaned the road from where the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balram and their Sister Subhadra passes.

Thousands of devotees joined the procession as it started its journey through the 14-km long route including some communally sensitive areas in the old city.

The ‘rathyatra’, oldest in the state, had devotees lined up alongside the chariots of Lord Jagannath, brother Balram and sister Shubhadra.

Eighteen decorated elephants and 98 decorated trucks will participate in the yatra in which three big decorated chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balram and their sister Subhadra will be pulled by 1,000 devotees.

The main chariots are closely followed by colourfully adorned elephants, trucks, motor vehicles, pilgrims on foot, acrobats and gymnasts.

Unprecedented security arrangements have been made in the city for the smooth conduct of the yatra, which is the first after the serial blasts last year.

Central paramilitary forces and state police have been deployed at various location in Ahmadabad.

      Patels or Patidar Community

The Patidar community in India, popularly known as Patels, is primarily from Hindu Agricultural Communities and is found mainly in Gujarat. Patidar are land owners (‘PATI’ means land and ‘DAR’ means the person who owns it) and apart from Gujarat, they have presence in different states of India as well like Punjab, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka, as well as metropolitan cities like Mumbai, and Delhi. Over the years, the Patels have made their presence felt in a big way in UK and US as well so much so that in the US, the surname ‘Patel’ bags 174 place out of the top 500 list of most common last names.

      The Patel

Best known for producing raw gold from earth, it is said that then the Gujarat ruler, Mohammed Begdo, chose the best farmer from every village and gifted them with a land for cultivation purpose. In return, the Patidar would pay the ruler a certain income for a certain period of time, thereafter; the Patidar would acquire the land ownership. These Patidars were referred to as Patel Patidars from then onwards. Today, the Patel community in Gujarat is divided in four sub-castes (1) the Kadavas (2) the Leuas (3) the Anjanas (4) the Matis. Leua Patels are generally found in Central Gujarat while Kadava Patidars are majorly found in North Gujarat, while the Matia Patidars, a sub-section of the Leuas and are found in south Gujarat.

It goes without saying that majority of Patels are Hindus, however, there’s a significant presence of Patels in Muslims and Parsi communities as well. For that matter, even Pakistani’s citizens carry the Patel Surname. So, it won’t be an exaggeration, if we say that Patel surname is ubiquitous, a community that has settled all across the world in search for a better life and prosperous living.

For the starters, the enterprising Patels have been an important cog in US’s hospitality wheel what with 60 percent of the mid-sized motels being run by people of Indian origin, and of these, not surprisingly though, about one-third have the surname Patel as per the Asian American Hotel Association (A.A.H.O.A). As per the records, most of these Patels got settled in US during 1960s and 1970s. They arrived here for higher studies and seemingly did manage to get their engineering and other PG degrees, but couldn’t land themselves with satisfactory professional jobs, eventually resorting to buying dilapidated properties and turning them around as profit making motels.

There’s also a story that says that Indians who migrated to Uganda and Kenya during the British Raj may have probably adopted the surname Patel, and so subsequently passed on the adopted surname to the descendants of these migrants. On the other hand, original Patels who migrated to East Africa and South Africa changed their surnames to signify the birthplace, or their trade for that matter. The descendants of these migrants subsequently carried on with their adopted surnames.

Apparently, the Patidar Community has given Gujarat many great personalities like Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Vitthalbhai Patel (brother of Sardar Patel ),Bhailalbhai Patel alias ‘Bhaikaka’ the architect of Vallbhvidyanagar, , Shri Arvind N. Mafatlal, Shri Jaikrishna, and well-known literary figures like Ishwar Petalikar, Raghuvir chaudhary and Pannalal Patel.
