Rajkot – The land of opportunity

History of Rajkot City

Rajkot is a city in Gujarat state, India. It was once the capital of the princely state of Rajkot, and is now the headquarters of Rajkot District. It is located in the middle of the peninsula of Kathiawar, some 70 kilometers from the Gulf of Kachchh. The town is bisected by the Aji River. Its most notable institution is Rajkumar College, which was founded in 1870 for the education of the sons of local chiefs and princes, and was modeled by its founder, Col. R. H. Keatinge, on Eton College. Mahatma Gandhi was educated in Rajkot at the Alfred High School (founded in 1875). Once the capital of the princely state of Saurashtra, Rajkot was founded by Vibhoji, the younger son of Ajoji. It is the town where Mahatma Gandhi spent the early years of his life. The city, also a former British government headquarters, has a number of impressive colonial buildings and educational institutions. It is famous for silver, textiles and a National weaving institute which promotes traditional weaves. The pleasant town is an important industrial area and a religious centre of the Arya Samaj.

rajkot location

The city extends from latitude 23°32 in the North to longitude 70°4 in the East. Rajkot, now a major industrial town, was once the capital of a princely State. It has the rich heritage of ancient civilization and freedom struggle. Rajkot shares many memories with the political as well as cultural history of India. Gandhi has rightly called the city a priceless laboratory for the freedom struggle based on non-violence. Rafleshwar of Rajkot Rajkot is a part of the Jamnagar Circuit comprising places like Dwarka, Jamnagar, Pirotam Island, and Rajkot.

Rajkot offers you an insight into the life of the Mahatma who almost single-handedly led a great nation and shaped India’s destiny. All you need is to go through the Kaba Gandhi No Delo and Rashtriya Shala where exhibits of Gandhi and his philosophy are practically carried on. The Watson Museum offers a good insight into the past. Rajkot also gives an opportunity to buy Gujarati handlooms and handicrafts, which are famous all over India. The Gujarati dishes, which are known for their sweet and sour tinge, are not to be missed.

Rajkot Attractions

Rajkot city showcases several great attractions. The Rajkot city map should easily take you to these must-see destinations within the city.

Kaba Gandhi No Delo

The above term refers to ‘the residence of Kaba Gandhi’. Kaba Gandhi was Mahatma Gandhi’s father who’s real name was Karamchand Gandhi. This is Gandhiji’s ancestral house in Rajkot where he stayed during his early childhood. His father was the Chief Minister to the Saurashtran Nawab. It now contains the ‘Gandhi Smriti’, a museum that has photographs and Gandhi’s personal belongings. It is a memorial to the Father of the Nation. The house continues to attract tourists all year around as part of homage paid to the great Mahatma.

Watson Museum and Library, Rajkot

Saurashtra’s rich cultural heritage is evident within the walls of Watson Museum. Centrally located in Jubilee Gardens this museum stands as a celebration of the life of Colonel John Watson. The museum showcases a wide display of silverware, pieces of Mohenjodaro artifacts, carvings from the 13th century, exhibits of natural history, textiles and a marvelous Queen Victoria statue. There are artifacts that date back to the Indus Valley Civilization. Apart from this, you can view the portraits of European royalty and those of Saurashtra royal princes. The museum is open from 9a.m to 12.30p.m and 2.30p.m to 5.00p.m.

The Rajkumar College, Rajkot

The grand Rajkumar College dates back 136 years and was founded in 1868. It stands as one of Rajkot’s oldest educational institutions. It caters to the academic, physical, behavioral and cultural development of students as well as inculcating a sense of social responsibility. Originally instituted for the princely order, this institution spread over 25 acres, still stands as an emblem for quality education.

Mahatma Gandhi High School

This school stands out not only for its Gothic Norman structure but also for its high standard of education. Established in Rajkot in 1853, this institution was previously called as Alfred high School. It was within these hallowed walls that Mahatma Gandhiji earned his secondary education. Plans are underway to alter the main building into a museum.

Rashtriya Shala

The Rashtriya Shala in Rajkot was founded by Mahatma Gandhi and was based on the Gandhian model. Rashtriya Shala started in a humble way in a rented location in Rajkot, on February 21, 1921. Today it is a center for Patola weaving and handicrafts. Your trip to Rajkot will be incomplete without a stop at this location.

Other places to visit while at Rajkot include Jagat Mandir, Wankaner Palace and the Aji Dam.

Visiting Rajkot

Once Saurashtra’s capital, this lively city has much to offer the world traveler. Nestled in Gujarat, Rajkot is about 1131 kilometers from India’s capital Delhi and 761 kilometers from India’s business capital Mumbai.

If your travel plan includes Rajkot city then plan your trip between October and March. This is winter time and the weather is pleasant when compared to the high temperatures of summer or the wet monsoons. However, if you like a little adventure then you must get sight of Rajkot’s heavy rainfall and early fog.

Being centrally located, reaching Rajkot is extremely easy. Whether you choose to enter by air, road or rail, your journey will be pleasant. If you are flying in then you will have to choose a nearby destination as the city only has a domestic airport. Once you arrive at Rajkot city, transportation is fairly simple. There are an ample number of taxis, autos and rickshaws available. In fact, the best way to experience the city would be to travel through these means and on foot!

If shopping is in your agenda then get your bags ready. Rajkot boasts of India’s best Bandhani saris. Famous internationally, these saris can be a perfect keepsake to remember the color and vibrancy that this city offers. Patch work and mirror work material can also be found at discounted rates. Rajkot city is also famous for silk embroidery done to perfection.

If all that shopping has made you hungry then you can head to one of the numerous hotels and restaurants that offer authentic and scrumptious cuisine. You can take your pick from five and three star hotels or experience the rustic ambience of road side dhabas. Either way, visiting Rajkot city will be one memory that you will cherish forever.

Rajkot Culture

Rajkot with its unique geography, totally landlocked in the South and with an open beautiful sea to the North, has imbibed the flavors of both regions. The word Gujarati has originated from Gujjar, the people who invaded the North and West India.

The people here are predominantly vegetarians and are vehemently against any form of hunting. This could be the main reason for the survival of rich fauna in this city. Jains and Marvaris are the main Hindu sects here. They are also the richest business class of India. Some notable global names have their origins in Gujarat such as Azim Premji of Wipro, Dhirubhai Ambani of Reliance Industries and Vikram Sarabhai of ISRO.

garba-rajkot

The women in Rajkot are very fond of jewelry. Large chains, pendants and other heavy gold jewelry are a common sight during marriages and festivals. The Rajkot men love to flaunt thick gold chains and numerous rings on their fingers. The attire changes with the season and approaching festivals. The ladies normally wear the Gujarati flavor of the Sari and men can be seen in flowing Kurtas.

Garba, a dance form, is popular both with men and women and is performed during the Navratri festival. The dance starts before midnight and continues until dawn. Mata Ambe, who rides a Lion, has a special reverential status with any highly religious Gujarati.

Rajkot city is best known as a place that mixes tradition with modernity. This perfect blend is evident in its architecture and cuisine. The 21st century has not left Rajkot India trailing behind.

Places in Rajkot

Rajkot, a bustling commercial city in Gujarat province of India, is situated in the West zone dominated by the Little Runn of Kutchh to the North. It is bordered by Porbunder, Jamnagar, Surendernagar, Bhavnagar, Amreli and Junagarh districts of the State of Gujarat. There are a number of places of interest in Rajkot India and many historic locations if you have plans of traveling to this city.

Places in Rajkot

A city guide to Rajkot will take you to the birth place of Mahatama Gandhi, the father of the Nation. The ancestral home, Kaba Gandhi No Delo, has been converted into a Gandhi Smriti, where several memorabilia associated with Gandhiji are housed.

Alfred High School is also associated with Mahatama Gandhi. This school in Rajkot city is where he obtained his initial schooling. The Rashtriya Shala was this son of the soil, and is now famous for a handweaving called Patola. The Rajkot city map will take you to the Nehru Gate leading to the market of Mobi. The Hanging Bridge, Watson Museum and Library and Jagat Temple built with red stones are a few more notable landmarks of Rajkot city.

Places around Rajkot

If you are traveling as a group to Rajkot city, then Lal Pari Lake is a scenic place to visit. A Rajkot city map should take you to Ajit Dam about 8 kilometers off city limits. If you want to marvel on the industrious exploits of man, then this is certainly the right spot for you. Rajkot city offers the splendor of the princely bygone era to certain exclusive guests at the Palace of Wankaner. Head South East, just 60 kilometers and you will reach the sanctuary of Hingolgarh Castle on a hill top. Keep your cameras ready to roll as you may find some exotic animals frolicking in the grasslands. Rajkot has its share of ancient civilization as glimpses of Harappan culture are evident Kuntasi and Rajodi.

What technical skills Require to support HTML5?

  • Web designers and developers who know HTML, XHTML, CSS and Javascript are well positioned to transition to HTML5. If you don’t have these skills in-house, you may want to think about adding them.
  • Increasingly, web development will become a core requirement for publishers looking to extend their content across multiple platforms. The skills of developers experienced in Flash and other plug-in technologies may be less transferable to an HTML5 environment.

Web software, HTML editors, Web editors, Web designers, XML schema, XML tutorials

  • If you have Flash developers on staff, keep them — they’ll still have plenty of work to do for the foreseeable future. If you outsource Web design and development, make sure your agency is ramping up its HTML5 expertise.

JYOTIRLINGA: Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain (M.P.)

Mahakaleshwar Temple is a famous shrine that comprises one of the twelve major Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Accredited as the sacred abode of Lord Shiva, Mahakaleshwar Temple is located on the banks of Rudra Sagar Lake of Ujjain in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. In order to reach the temple, one can take regular buses or taxis that are available throughout Madhya Pradesh. Lord Shiva is the presiding deity of time and eternally resides in the form of lingam (phallic form) at Ujjain.

The glorious temple of Mahakaleshwar has been mentioned in several ‘Puranas’ (scriptures) of the Hindu mythology. Many poets of Sanskrit, including Kalidasa, have sung the praises of this temple. Lord Shiva is synonymous with ‘Mahakal’ and suggests the perpetual existence of the Almighty. As stated earlier, Mahakaleshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in India. This Jyotirlinga is said to be ‘swayambhu’ (self-manifested) that obtained its ‘Shakti’ (power) from within itself, unlike other lingams that were established ritually by chanting ‘mantra’.

Mahakaleshwar is recognized as ‘Dakshinamurti’, since the image of the lord faces the southern direction. This is another exclusive feature that is traceable only in Mahakaleshwar. In the sanctum, the idol of Omkareshwar (another form of Lord Shiva) is placed above the shrine of Mahakaleshwar. The site is adorned by the images of Lord Ganesh, Parvati and Kartikay, placed in the west, north and east direction respectively. In the south, there is an image of Nandi (Lord Shiva’s Cow). The third storey comprises an idol of Nagchandreshwar (another form of Lord Shiva), but its ‘darshan’ are available only on the day of Nagpanchami.

Architecture
During Muslim invasions, the original temple was attacked and it was reconstructed by the Scindias in the recent times. The spire of this three-storied temple dominates the skyline of southern part of Ujjain. The huge and grand structure of the temple is awe-inspiring. The curved structure is festooned with motifs on its all sides, intensifying above the pillared porches. The corridors’ walls are garlanded with the old statues and sculptures, whereas the courtyard comprises remnants of ancient shrines. The floors are decked with pricked railings, while the balconies are festooned with splendid roofs festooned in Rajput architectural style.

Festivals & Rituals
According to the Hindu beliefs, Lord Shiva is considered as the destroyer of the Universe. This belief is further enhanced by the fact that the Lord dwells in the cremation grounds. In this temple, one ritual includes a ceremony, where the lingam is smeared with the hot ash that is brought from the cremation grounds. This ritual suggests the vicious circle of life and death that is an inseparable part of the Hindu mythology.

‘Mahashivratri’ is the major festival that is observed in the temple with full gusto and fervor. At this time, a grand fair is held in the vicinity of this temple. For the whole night, prayers and worship are offered to the Lord. This sculptural delight allures people with its divine charisma and religious appeal from all over the World.

Location: In Ujjain, on the banks of Rudra Sagar Lake, Madhya Pradesh
Dedicated to: Lord Shiva
Significance: One of the twelve Jyotilingas of Shiva
How to reach: One can easily reach Mahakaleshwar Temple by taking regular Buses or by hiring Taxis from anywhere in Madhya Pradesh

When is Maha Shivaratri in 2011

Shivratri or Maha Shivaratri is one of the major Hindu festivals celebrated with gaiety. Shivratri 2011 or Maha Shivaratri 2011 date is March 3rd, Thursday. It is observed on Falgun Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi as per North Indian calendars and Magha Krishna Chaturdashi as per Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh calendars. Devotees observe upvas (fasting) and Jagran on Shivratri to get blessings of Lord Shiva.

In the Puranas many myths, stories and legends explain the origin and significance of the festival Maha Shivaratri. As per one, during the period of churning the ocean (sagar manthan) by the gods and the demons, a pot of poison (Kaal koot) emerged from the ocean. This sudden incident terrified the dev ganas and asura ganas as the poison was capable of creating mahapralaya (deluge), which can destroy the entire universe.

To save themselves and the universe they went to Lord Shiva for help. For the worlds safer existence and the survival of living beings, Shiva drank the ‘Kaal koot visha (terrible poison). But, instead of swallowing he kept it in his throat. Keeping the deadly poison in his throat made Shivas throat turn blue. Because of this great miracle Shiva is also called Neelakanta, the one who has blue throat. To commemorate the event of Shiva protecting the world with his miraculous act,

Rail Based Multi Modal Freight Logistics Park Acrross the DMIC (Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridors)

Rail Based Multi Modal Freight Logistics Park Acrross the DMIC (Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridors)

  1. Logistics play a citadel role in the modern intelligent supply chain management. It is defined as the broad range of activities concerned with effective and efficient movement of semi-finished or finished product from one business to another or from manufacturer/distributor/retailer to the end consumer. It relates to freight transportation, warehousing material handling, protective packaging inventory control, order processing, and marketing, forecasting and other value added services.
  2. With a view to provide efficient logistics services, Indian Railways has embarked into a massive investment to create dedicated freight corridor between Delhi and Mumbai (called Western DFC) and Ludhiana and Howrah (called Eastern DFC), which could provide high speed, heavy pay load only for freight traffic. Western DFC passes through most high density transport arteries of the country i.e. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar pradesh with a route length of 1483km.
  3. Gujarat shares 38% of the route covering Valsad, Surat, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, Mehsana, Palanpur. This corridor is expected to carry predominantly, container traffic, bulk and break-bulk cargo. To support this infrastructure, DMIC Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, Special Economic Zones, MMLPs Investment Regions, Industrial Area are likely to be set up contiguous to Western DFC in the coming years.MMLP is the refined form of Logistics Park where various value added services are rendered in addition to rail/road based transportation. It is now-a-days a globally identified supply management and known by different names in different countries.

    • Excellent transport links of rail and road
    • Custom clearance facilities
    • Round the clock services
    • One window services
    • Enhanced security systems
    • Availability of more options to the users
    • Value added services

      Geography and Climate of surat

      Geography

Surat the second capital of Gujarat is growing much as its neighboring metro Mumbai and by 2020 it is estimated that Surat will be the largest city in Gujarat state and its urbanization will stretch from Kosamba in north to Billimora in south. Surat is a port city situated on the banks of the Tapti river (damming of the Tapti caused the original port facilities to close, the nearest port is now in the Hazira area of Surat Metropolitan Region). The city is located at 21°10′N 72°50′E / 21.17°N 72.83°E / 21.17; 72.83 It has an average elevation of 13 meters. The Surat district is surrounded by Bharuch, Narmada (North), Navsari and Dang (South) districts. To the west is the Gulf of Cambay. The climate is tropical and monsoon rainfall is abundant (about 2,500 mm a year).

Surat has grown in area since the early 1700s. The oldest part of the city developed in the area between the train station and the area known as Athwalines. Since the 1970s most of the new development including the most desirable location for the city’s burgeoning middle and upper class is the area between Athwalines and the coast at Dumas.

      Climate

Surat has a Tropical monsoon climate, moderated strongly by the Arabian Sea. The summer begins in early March and lasts till June. April and May are the hottest months, the average temperature being 30 °C. Monsoon begins in late June and the city receives about 800 mm of rain by the end of September, with the average temperature being around 28 °C during those months. October and November see the retreat of the monsoon and a return of high temperatures till late November. Winter starts in December and ends in late February, with average temperatures of around 22 °C, and little rain.

Very often heavy monsoon rain brings floods in the Tapi basin area. In last two decades, the city has witnessed major floods every four years, the worst being the flood of August 2006, perhaps the costliest in the city’s history. In the second week of August 2006, a massive flood caused severe damage to the city of Surat. According to a report released by Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad (IIM-A), massive flood after release of water from Ukai Dam had caused major human tragedy and property damage estimated at Rs 22,000 cr on that day. In less than three days, at least 150 people died directly due to flood and many other due to water-borne diseases that followed. More than 1500 animal carcasses were later hauled out of the mud.

Nation Modi flags off Jagannath yatra in Ahmedabad

on Rath Yatra, from thousands of sources worldwide. High-quality photos, articles, The latest news on Rath Yatra, from thousands of sources worldwide. High-quality photos, articles, blog posts, quote

Ahmedabad: The annual chariot festival of the Hindu god Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra started here Tuesday morning with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi flagging off the daylong procession amid the chanting of hymns.

The 133rd Jagannath Rath Yatra started from the Jagannath temple at Jamalpur locality at 7 a.m. with Modi performing the ‘pahandi’ ritual (carrying the deities from the temple to the chariots) and cleaning the Lord’s chariot with a golden broom.

He then pulled the ropes of the chariot to embark on the 22 km long ‘nagarcharya’ procession, that will wind it’s way through Ahmedabad through the length of the day.

Minister of State for Home Amit Shah was present at the temple along with other political leaders and other dignitaries.

The procession comprises 18 decorated elephants and 18 trucks displaying various ‘akhadas’ and ‘bhajan mandalis’. Before the start of the yatra, tribals performed the traditional folk dance at the temple.

A huge crowd thronged the temple and then joined the procession as it began its journey under the watchful gaze of 14,000 police personnel who had spread out through the city.

A tiered structure of around 600 assistants and sub-inspectors, 275 inspectors, 77 assistants commissioners, 31 deputy commissioners watched over by five joint commissioners of police marks the security blanket thrown over Ahmedabad to ensure the peaceful conduct of this magnum annual religious event of Gujarat.

“We are prepared for all eventualities and have worked out the security for the event with care and foresight, since Ahmedabad has for long been in the crosshairs of terror networks,” said Satish Sharma, joint commissioner of police.

The arrest of two suspected activists of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) from here Monday night had heightened security fears. However, officials said the arrests of the two with arms and ammunition had not dampened enthusiasm for the festival.

“As far as altered security perceptions are concerned, the only change is that anti-sabotage vigilance has been intensified after the SIMI members’ arrests,” said Sharma.

CCTV cameras have been set up in the whole route of the chariot journey, which includes sensitive areas like Kalupur, Dariapur and Shahpur.

MF Hussain passes away passes away

India’s most celebrated painter — MF Hussain passed away in London on Thursday (June 9) morning. The noted artist died at Royal Brompton hospital in London at 2:30 a.m. local time.

A recipient of Padma Vibhushan in 1991, Hussain was in indifferent health for the last month-and-a-half. Hussain, 95, died in exile from his homeland in India, having become a Qatari citizen in 2006.

Husain had come under intense criticism following his controversial paintings on Hindu goddesses.

One of his most controversial paintings was the depiction of Mother India in the nude and was superimposed on a map of India. After a series of sustained protests by Hindu groups, he withdrew the painting from an exhibition, and later apologised.

One of India’s greatest masters on the world art stage, Husain’s paintings regularly fetched over $1 million at auctions around the world.
